We LOVE our Community!
With only 1 day of school left, we found some awesome people in our community to help keep our learning exciting and fun 'til the end. This morning, we were able to catch a bus ride downtown with our 2nd grade students. Our first stop was at Frontier Bank. When we arrived, they divided our students into three groups according to the small coin paper they were given. The students were able to tour and learn about the vault, various offices, and machines throughout the bank. Our 2nd graders were treated to dollar sign sugar cookies and juice, learned all about stocks, and brainstormed some companies that might be smart to invest in. They were reminded to keep working hard in school but especially in Math, if they want to work at a bank someday! Regardless of their career choice, they were encouraged to keep saving their coins and money for their future, which hopefully includes college. They learned that Frontier Bank even has super neat prizes they can earn there for opening their own savings account! Everyone was so kind and hospitable. Thanks for "investing" your time in our 2nd graders today, Frontier Bank! Everyone thought it was well "worth" it!
Next, we walked over to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office. Our students were divided into three groups there as well. With Lyon County Sheriff Hilt our 2nd graders were able to tour the dispatch room and meet Dispatcher, Marie Kruse. Students learned all about her responsibilities for answering 9-1-1 calls, alerting ambulance and fire rescues, and communicating with the deputies. Sheriff Hilt encouraged all of the students to make sure they have their home address memorized in case of an emergency. Next, he took us to the booking room and showed us where people who are arrested get their picture taken, are fingerprinted, and are placed in a holding cell. After this, we went outside to meet with Chief Deputy Dorhout and see the inside of a brand new Lyon County police truck. He turned on the flashing lights and demonstrated the different alarms they sometimes need to use. Our last and perhaps favorite station was our time with Deputy Stoner and her K9, Honey. My students were so excited to pet Honey and even at only 9 months old, she was so calm and patient with them. Then Deputy Stoner asked my students to form a tunnel for Honey to practice being brave and running through to fetch her favorite toy, a ball. Thank you to everyone at the Lyon County Sheriff's Office for taking time out of your busy day to teach our students just how valuable your role is in our community. You are very appreciated!
To end our day, we invited Emma Moser, from the Lyon County Dairy Association, to share her knowledge about dairy cattle with our students. She showed a short video about milking cows and then shared some fun facts. For example, did you know that a cow drinks a bathtub full of water every day and that dairy cattle get a two-month vacation, similar to our summer break, to allow their calves to grow, and they do not produce milk during this time? After discussing some things that we consume that are considered dairy products, Mrs. Moser encouraged everyone to eat/drink at least three of them a day. She also surprised everyone with an ice cream bar before she left. Thank you, Lyon County Dairy Association and Mrs. Moser for visiting our school today!
