We LOVE our Community!

This last week of school, we connected with some amazing people in our community to help keep our learning exciting and fun 'til the end. On Monday morning, we invited Emma Moser, from the Lyon County Dairy Association, to share her knowledge about dairy cattle with our students. She showed a short video about milking cows and then shared some fun facts. For example, did you know that a cow drinks a bathtub full of water every day and that dairy cattle get a two-month vacation, similar to our summer break, to allow their calves to grow, and they do not produce milk during this time? After discussing some things that we consume that are considered dairy products, Mrs. Moser encouraged everyone to eat/drink at least three of them a day. She also surprised everyone with an ice cream bar. Thank you, Lyon County Dairy Association and Mrs. Moser for visiting our school!

On Wednesday morning, Nurse Crystal Top from Health Services of Lyon County came to talk about bicycle safety. She showed a short video, reminded everyone about the importance of wearing a helmet, bright colored clothing, and having reflectors on your bike. She also reviewed the hand signals to use when turning and stopping on your bike and/or scooter, encouraged riding with traffic on the right side of the road, not biking distracted, and obeying traffic laws similar to other vehicles on the road. We sure appreciate her caring advice to keep all of our friends and families safe this summer and look forward to hitting the bike trails soon.

This morning, we were able to catch a bus ride downtown with our 2nd grade students. Our first stop was at Frontier Bank. When we arrived, they divided our students into three groups according to the small coin paper they were given. The students were able to tour and learn about the vault, various offices, and machines throughout the bank. Our 2nd graders were treated to a snack and juice, learned all about savings, and were reminded to keep working hard in school, but especially in Math, if they want to work at a bank someday! Regardless of their career choice, they were encouraged to keep saving their coins and money for their future, which hopefully includes college. They learned that Frontier Bank even has super neat prizes they can earn there for opening their own 'Lil Pioneer savings account! Everyone was so kind and hospitable. Thanks for "investing" your time in our 2nd graders today, Frontier Bank!  Everyone thought it was well "worth" it!

Next, we walked over to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office. Our students were divided into three classes there as well. Our first station was with Deputy Stoner and her K9, Honey. Everyone was so excited to pet Honey and she was so calm and patient with them. Deputy Stoner told us all about the places Honey visits to greet people and provide comfort. She also shared that Honey has a sister, Bee, who is a "stay-at-home dog", as one of my students titled her. Next, Deputy Stoner asked my students to form a tunnel for Honey to practice being brave and run through to fetch her favorite toy, a ball. She did great! Our next station was with Sheriff Hilt to tour the dispatch room and learn all about the responsibilities for answering 9-1-1 calls, alerting ambulance and fire rescues, and communicating with the deputies. Sheriff Hilt encouraged all of the students to make sure they have their home address memorized in case of an emergency. After this, we went outside to meet with Deputy Horstman and our SRO, Deputy Minor. They showed us what spike strips look like and what a breathalyzer is for. Everyone also had a chance to sit inside Deputy Minor's truck and turn on the flashing lights as well as sit in the backseat. Lastly, my students had fun exploring the Lyon County Ambulance and checking out the rescue equipment. Thank you to everyone at the Lyon County Sheriff's Office and the Lyon County EMTs for taking time out of your busy day to teach our students just how valuable your role is. We appreciate your service to our community.
