Egg Drop
In General Science during May Term we started off with an experiment that needed us to do some collaboration and prototype building. We first watch the Perseverance land on Mars and talked about how the scientists had to use team work to find the best way to be successful. Then the students were challenged to make a contraption that would be able to land a raw egg safely in a one story drop to cement. The challenge was that they could only use up to 6 sheets of paper and 50 cm of masking tape. Many students have made successful egg drop contraptions in the past using any supplies they wanted but this was a brand new challenge.
First they had to make a drawing of what they wanted to build, then they had to build it. When we did our drops, only 3 of 25 eggs survived; click through the pictures to see which eggs survived and which ones didn't. It was a good lesson to realize that even when we don’t succeed in the original challenge, we learn and modify. It is just a step in the overall process.
