My Classroom
I teach social studies and language to both sections of fifth grade. I also teach reading/spelling to my homeroom students. In Social Studies, we focus on US History all the way from the Native Americans to World War II. The curriculum is presented in a number of ways, and various projects are completed that summarize the topics being discussed. In addition to this curriculum, current events are highlighted through a weekly television show, "Assignment the World", which is taped off of IPTV.
In Language, we cover the eight major parts of speech, beginning with nouns and ending with prepositions. Along with this curriculum, the students also complete a newspaper unit and various forms of creative writing activities relating to the holidays throughout the school year.
In reading/spelling, we not only focus on the units in our basal reader, but we also read several novels. They include: My Side of the Mountain , Castle in the Attic, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and Bridge to Terabithia. A variety of activities, including many writing activities are completed throughout the novel unit. A poetry unit is also completed during the school year.
