Jazz Band 

Central Lyon High School Jazz Band's first competitive season began in January of 2003, when they traveled to Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville to compete with 10 other class 1A schools and received several individual outstanding soloist awards. The band placed seventh in their first state competition at the Iowa Jazz Championships in Des Moines. In addition to these competitions, the Jazz Band performs at the school's Swing Show each spring.

The Iowa Jazz Championships, founded by Iowa jazz educators in 1976, showcases 60 of the state's finest high school jazz ensembles. It is currently held in Ames every April and features 15 groups from each of the four Iowa high school classifications. All ensembles perform in the daytime preliminary competition, and the top two bands from each classification perform in the evening finals competition.  The judges place the top eight bands and the other seven bands in each class receive a participant plaque.
