Novel I students begin the semester learning about the history of the novel as well as different elements, terms, and strategies necessary for appreciating classic literature.  Our first novel was Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.  The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was the second followed by Anthem by Ayn Rand.  One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Fahrenheit 451, and a Separate Peace round out the semester's novels.  Students study themes, symbols, and motifs and are writing a literary analysis on a novel of their choice.  In addition, classroom discussions continue to be vital to fully understanding and appreciating the different aspects of each novel.
