Notice to Parents

Friday, May 1

Dear Central Lyon Families & Staff,

Thank you to those that were able to pick up their personal belongings this week. If you were unable to do so, your student’s materials will be available for pick-up in the elementary/middle school vestibule or high school vestibule.

Return to Learn Survey

School leaders have been planning for the start of the 2020-21 school year. I am asking for students and families to provide us with feedback on distance learning that has occurred during the school closure. I want to know what has worked well and allow for improvement in the event we need to return to this type of teaching and learning format next school year.

Please take time this weekend to complete the following survey. The deadline for completion is Tuesday, May 5 at 6:00 p.m.

In addition, your feedback on the 2020-21 calendar will help the school board make an informed decision about when it is best to educate students in a traditional, face-to-face environment. The school board’s priorities when considering changes to next year’s school calendar will remain:

  1. The health and safety of students and staff.
  2. Flexibility: in the event of a future school closure, options need to be considered so the calendar maximizes time to educate students in-person.
  3. The educational needs of students.

Grab & Go Meal Updates

Due to the increased volume of meals served since our location change started Monday, students and families in Rock Rapids should plan to continue to pick-up meals at the Bus Garage (603 S 2nd Avenue East from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) or the Soccer Field Parking Lot Entrance (1100 S 4th Avenue from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.). Students and families in Doon may still pick-up meals at the public library parking lot (from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.), and meals will continue to be delivered to those living outside the city limits of Rock Rapids and Doon. To receive this service, call the high school office: (712) 472-2664.

Today we fed more than 230 students, bringing our total meals served to just over 6,000. Meals will continue to be provided until the last day of school on May 15. Individuals and businesses who wish to financially support the meal program should email Jackie Wells at jwells@centrallyon.org.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Let me be the first to tip my cap to the Central Lyon faculty and staff! As a father of two Central Lyon students, I’m so thankful for the teachers who are helping my wife and I raise our children. Thank you for the countless hours you pour into your profession, making learning meaningful for students, and developing life-long relationships with the students of Central Lyon.

Onward Lions,

Brent Jorth
